Introducing the Sports Series

Every four years billions of people worldwide are transfixed on their TV sets to watch 22 grown men kick a piece of leather at the world cup. For a magical 90 minutes, billions of eye balls including mine will be watching the world cup finals in South Africa in July 2010.  The city of London will spend £9 Billion to host the 2012 Olympics games. People love sports, love it, love it, love it. Welcome to the brand new series that will use the power of sports to illustrate life changing lessons.

Sports Passion

I am neither a sports player nor a sports fanatic but I am always surrounded by many. The energy is contagious. The wild roar of a cheering squad is very uplifting. How does watching your team play make you feel? For many it elicits all sorts of emotions. Seeing your team win can make you extremely elated. A score by the opponent can deflate your mood faster than you can say “I love Daniel Ngari” :)

I grew up in Kenya and we had a black & white television. Every Saturday night we would be glued on the TV watching “Football Made in Germany”. Regardless of what teams were playing I always supported the team in “black” (could have been blue or red, but black according to our TV). My sister always supported the team in “white” and we would passionately watch the game before going to bed, either very happy or really sad. The winner would still be gloating the next morning as we went to Sunday school (church).

Living in Western Australia has exposed me to a maniacal level of passion for sports. Australia is a great sporting nation and many people here adore Cricket and Australian Rules Football. If you want to see real passion for sports head to Subiaco Oval during a Western Derby (Fremantle Dockers vs West Coast Eagles Game).

I am sure you understand what am talking about here about sports passion. No matter where you are in the world, you can tell the power of sports in rallying people together. Perhaps you have experienced the excitement and passion of being at a live game or even on television. I found it amusing listening to Kenyans in Nairobi pubs arguing about English premier league matches. You would be forgiven for thinking that they had been attending the live matches as paid-up club members for years! Such is the passion. Sports has a million lessons to do with personal development and success that we shall explore in detail, in this series.

Relate to Sports

I chose this series because we can all relate to sports albeit at different levels. I will explore aspects of sports and draw powerful lessons to inspire you to be the best you can be. I will not be writing in too much detail about any one sport or team. We can fight about our favorite teams at another platform. My intention for this series is to teach and to learn to better ourselves in life using sporting analogies.

Sports Success

What I love about sports is the unmistakable success and the associated joy of winning. You can either win or lose. The statistics are there to prove it, the scores are kept. Sports makes legends. People like Diego Maradonna , Don Bradman, Michael Jordan, Kipchoge Keino etc are likely to remain in history books for a long time to come. Let me not give way too much about what the series will contain. All I can say to you my friend is that this is not the series to miss. I can confidently say that it will be the most powerful series in the blog’s history. Please be checking in daily for updates and remember to share the articles with your friends.

Other Series

In case you had missed it, this blog is organized in “series”. Each series consists of about 10 – 20 articles that are closely related in one subject area. The following are the series we have covered so far.

  • Success Series – This was the original series that set the foundation for this blog. If you have not read the blog since January 2009, please read this highly inspirational series of articles. You will truly be inspired to succeed in your life.
  • Power SeriesThis series has proved to be a major hit with blog readers. Many new and old visitors end up reading all the articles in this series according to my blog statistics. You will find a powerful arsenal of ideas such as the power of persistence, the power of action, the power of hardwork and the power of follow up.
  • People SeriesNo man is an island. We need each other to succeed in life. This series focused on how to relate with other people on your success journey. We looked at topics such as contacts building, gossip etc.
  • Mind SeriesThis is my favorite series. If you have not read it please consider doing so. Success or failure is all in the mind. This series explored various aspects of harnessing the power of the mind to succeed in life. Success battles are first won in the mind.
  • Health SeriesHealth is wealth. What good is all the money in the world if you do not enjoy good health? This series is a bit on the serious side of life, yet it is very important. You will find a diverse range of topics from Alcohol to Exercise, from Sexual Health to Depression. Check it out if you love your health :)
  • Emotions SeriesThis was the hardest for me to write. It probably shows in my writing but I don’t care; I had to get the message out. It is hard as a guy to get in touch with your emotional side let alone communicating with others about emotions. Anyway, I will let you be the judge on that one.

  • “When all is said and done, it’s not the shots that won the championship that you remember, but the friendships you made along the way.” -Unknown
  • “Sports remain a great metaphor for life’s more difficult lessons. It was through athletics that many of us first came to understand that fear can be tamed; that on a team the whole is more than the sum of its parts; and that the ability to be heroic lies, to a surprising degree, within.” -Susan Casey
  • “An athlete is a normal person with the gift of an undying passion to be the best and achieve greatness.”  -Amanda Ring
  • “When you are out there on the soccer field playing, nothing else matters at the time. It’s like the whole world has disappeared, and you and your teammates are all that matters.” -Amber Massey
  • “The difference between a good athlete and a top athlete is the top athlete will do the mundane things when nobody’s looking.” -Susan True
  • “It may sound strange, but many champions are made champions by setbacks.” -Bob Richards
  • “To achieve in sports you first have to have a dream, and then you must act on that dream. The best athletes are those who truly enjoy what they are doing and display a tremendous amount of work ethic. They continue to persevere in spite of setbacks and never lose sight of their ultimate goal.” – Dianne Holum
  • “Winning is only half of it. Having fun winning is the other half.” -Bum Phillips
