How to use Blogging for Personal Branding

I always wondered why people  try to convert others to their way of thinking and way of doing things. A real estate developer may try to influence you to invest in property. A preacher may try to get you to say goodbye to a life of sin. And then there are bloggers (like me) trying to get you to start your own blog. Why is that?

When people get to do something, they get a deeper understanding of it. They see the insider benefits more clearly. I have seen the effects of blogging on my personal branding efforts. I will present the case for blogging to you; with the hope of inspiring you to start a blog today. (more…)

How Low Can You Sink?

My sister says that I swim like sediment. I tell myself that I am a pretty good swimmer; problem is, I cannot float. But as soon as I learn to float, I will be swimming from coast to coast. The last time I tried swimming at Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia, I sunk like the titanic. And that was just after watching Ghosts of the Abyss. Have you ever seen that movie? It is my all time favorite 3D movie.

In the movie Ghosts of the Abyss, master storyteller James Cameron journeys back to the legendary wreck of the Titanic.  He captivates 3D moviegoers with vivid sights of the majestic Titanic. The movie goes deep into the ocean floor to the wreckage, inside and out, as never seen before. Using state of the art technology, Cameron and his crew explore the insides of the wreckage, interspersed with imagery of the ship as it looked like before sinking. It was a site where 1,500 souls perished; the depths of the ocean where you do not want to sink your personal brand. (more…)

Are You A Purple Cow?

I recently read Seth Godin’s new book, Purple Cow. The book talks about transforming your business by being remarkable. In today’s competitive world, you cannot afford to be ordinary. Ordinary is the new invisible. You’re either a Purple Cow or you’re not. You’re either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice. (more…)

10+ Reasons to Beef Up Your Personal Brand

When I first came to Australia, my shopping trolley was always overflowing with gold. My salt was Black and Gold, my sugar was Black and Gold, my whole shopping trolley was Black and Gold. I always wondered why anybody would buy anything other than Black and Gold.

Black and Gold is a value for money generic brand for hundreds of essential items on supermarket shelves in Australia. Yet few affluent people will be caught with black and gold products on their shopping baskets. It makes me ask myself, why is it that people world over are willing to pay a premium for beefed up brands. How can you beef up your personal brand? Why should you? (more…)

3 Seconds First Impression

You don’t need a second chance to make a first impression. In fact you only have 3 seconds to make a first impression. Changing that first impression is harder than learning a new language. If you absolutely must make a lasting impression, you need to pack the best of you in those 3 seconds. Have I used up my 3 seconds yet? (more…)

How I Became a Chameleon

I grew up on a small farm on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. As a little boy I used to do what now reeks of animal cruelty. On Saturdays when I had time on my hands, I would grab six towels for my crazy experiment. Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Yellow and Grey.

Then I would go to the bushes behind out house and spend an hour or four looking for a chameleon. They were hard to find for the same reason I was seeking them (camouflage). I was sinfully fascinated with how they would change color. Placing the poor reptile on the red towel turned it red; green turned it green. Little did I know that one day, I would turn into a chameleon. (more…)

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. A single blog post on 5th of Jan 2009 was what set this blog in motion. I set out on a self discovery journey, with the aim of freeing myself from negative energy and to inspire my friends in the process.

The last four months have been an exciting journey for me. I have learned so much about the power of positive thinking and shared most of what I have learned. When you share something, it comes back to you, in good measure, pressed and well shaken. (more…)

How to Transition from Amateur to Professional

Are you an amateur or a professional? Do you get paid to play with what you love? Tiger Woods gets paid to play Golf, Kobe Bryant for Basketball and Lewis Hamilton for racing. Professionals make a living doing what they love, well; some of them don’t really love what they do, but that’s another story.

Mass media and increased leisure time has allowed sports men and women to command high pay as professional players. These players are able to make sport their primary career and gain immense opportunities for training and skill development. Going pro opens a whole world of opportunities. Transitioning from amateur to professional can be a little tricky though. (more…)

7 Time Management Lessons From Sports

With only 24 hours in a day, time is a finite resource that has to be well managed. If you manage to think through all aspects of sports, you will realize that there are many lessons in sports on time. Sports and time are natively interlinked.

Every minute counts in sports. The last five minutes of a world cup soccer game keeps fans at the edge of their seats. This is especially true if the game is hotly contested. In boxing, every micro second counts. It can be the difference between life and death. (more…)

Its Your Choice: Make Progress or be Relegated

Just like in sports, you can be relegated to lower ranks if you do not prove your worth in business, relationships, money and careers. Promotion and relegation in sports takes place at the end of each season. It involves teams being transferred between divisions.

The best-ranked teams in each division are promoted to the next-highest division, and at the same time the worst-ranked teams in the higher division are relegated (or demoted) to the lower division. In the English premier league, the bottom three teams are relegated. I hope today’s blog post inspires you to avoid the bottom positions. If you are not making progress, you risk being relegated. (more…)
