Today’s post is a little different. We look at a specific case of someone who wants to achieve a home business goal. A boxer stepping into the ring while at their peak is a dangerous machine. A tennis pro playing at their peak makes for exciting TV. Achieving peak performance has real benefits and provides a near certain path for goals attainment. I hope to inspire you to achieve peak performance in the next 30 days. Find out how.
Samantha is my dear imaginary friend. She has met the man of her dreams and he has just proposed. They plan to get married in exactly 18 months. Her mind is racing, exploding with ideas. She wants to make her marriage work. She wants to have the best wedding ever and a honeymoon to remember. There is only one problem. They are not so well financially grounded. She is finance major and does the projections. What does she find out? They cannot afford their dream wedding at their current level of income.
What to do? She decides to start a website that will kill two birds with one stone. She decides to start a wedding website that will make money to supplement their income. She wants to make money from it and sell it just before the wedding. She calls on me to help her and guide her through the process. Over coffee, this is what we come up with.
Daniel Ngari: Congratulations on your engagement.
Samantha: Thanks Dan. I really want to make this website succeed. You are experienced in internet marketing. How do I pull this off?
Daniel Ngari: First you have to decide why you want to build the website. Then you need to provide genuine value to your visitors. Then promote it like crazy.
Samantha: I don’t have much time for building the website. Plus I do not have much experience in web marketing. I have read a few articles on the web but the whole process seems so daunting.
Daniel Ngari: It is not that hard. It is not that easy either. You have a big enough reason for doing it. There is plenty of useful information online to help you.
Samantha: Getting started seems like the hardest part to me.
Daniel Ngari: Yeah, it usually is for most people. But without taking action, it is almost impossible to win in anything.
Samantha: Please run me through what I need to do to make this work.
Daniel Ngari: Ok. It is good that you have a general idea of what you want. I hope the following information will be useful to you. Just like in sports, you need to perform at your peak to achieve your goals in a short period of time. How about you try the following six steps in the next 30 days?
Samantha: Ok.
1. Decide
2. Clarity
3. Preparation
4. Baggage
5. Action
6. Automation
1 - Decide
It is good that you have already decided why you want to run this website. Many people want to succeed without having a big enough why. It seems like you are already clear on why you want to do this and how. That is a big plus.
Like all good things in life, it will not come easy. You must be willing to pay the price. When you are burning the midnight oil working on your site, think about your wedding and your honeymoon. Think about the rewards for your labor as you plough ahead. It is hard work but if you have a good reason for doing it, you will be willing to pay the price.
2 – Clarity
Begin with the end in mind. I remember last time we talked you mentioned that you want to use this as a learning experience for your own wedding planning. You also mentioned the exact amount you want to make from this site. That sounds like a reasonable amount.
Many people forget to set clear goals and an achievable path to attainment of their goals. You need to have a clear road map for the next 18 months. Spend the next 30 days being exactly clear on all facets of marketing and technologies that you shall be using. Be clear of exactly what work needs to be done and when.
3 – Preparation
You mentioned your fear of the work ahead. Don’t worry you are not alone; it is like that for even the best of the best. You can fight fear by adequately preparing yourself. You said that you are already reading a few articles on web design. That is great.
Did you check out those links I sent you for wedding websites? Spend the next 30 days understanding your competition and try and find an angle. It is a big market; there are lots of people looking for wedding information online.
Do your market research and come up with good keyword lists. Find out exactly what people are looking for and assess your monetization options. Get as much knowledge and intelligence on your market as possible. Understand the people you will be serving.
Plan your value proposition and how you shall communicate with your visitors, advertisers, affiliates and suppliers. Create a checklist of exactly what you need to do to launch the site. Things like logo, email address, domain name, branding, content, links, products etc. Do not leave any stone unturned.
Also be sure to create a good physical and mental working environment. If you find that you cannot work at home, maybe try going to the library. Create a section on your computer where you shall store all the relevant resources that you shall be coming across.
4 – Baggage
I have already talked about fear. Fear of failure is paralyzing. It can be eliminated by positive self talk and preparation. Drop all the baggage like negativity, self doubt and self sabotage. You know you can do this. You have to do this; remember? Believe in yourself. If you do not believe in yourself no one will.
5 – Action
At the end of the day, you want to make money from your website. The only way you can make money from it is if it is out there. Writing hundreds of articles and creating videos and leaving them on your computer is not going to do you much good.
Create a step by step guide on how you are going to move from A to B. Set your priorities right and remember to align your actions with your goals. Keep checking that your actions are taking you closer to your goals. The only actions that matter are those that are adding value to your visitors.
Research will be of help to you, but jumping from one wedding website to another for days will not help you. Only when you add stuff to your own site will it make a difference. Know when to draw the line with your research and surfing.
6 – Automation
To be able to perform at your peak, you need to have a system. All great sports men have a system. Their system may be as simple as setting aside a time for practice, diet or exercise regime.
You need to create a set of habits and let yourself work on autopilot. If you decide to be writing 3 articles a day, and spending the evening promoting your site, do it. Follow your system. You can either do it yourself or outsource it to someone else. Use the first 30 days to setup everything, be creative, and then get on autopilot mode (peak performance).
Summary
Achieving peak performance in any field of endeavor requires setting goals with clarity. You need to have a big reason for doing something that it propels you to take action. Action is the only way of achieving goals.
Have a system for performing at your peak. Use the first thirty days to prepare and build momentum then follow the autopilot system. Avoid self doubt and get rid of any excess baggage that may block your road to peak performance.
You can apply the same lessons to achieve peak performance in any area of your life, including business, sports, career, relationship or hobby. I wish you all the best.

@ Rebecca – Thanks for your kind message.
It is true there are quite a few internet scams preying on people who want to invest or find work online.
I have checked a few reputable outsourcing websites for you. Elance.com seems to be the only one that takes contractors from Africa. Check out their site http://www.elance.com
Another company that I recommend is Odesk. http://www.odesk.com , but am not so sure if they take contractors from Africa, it is not apparent on their sign up form.
Generally a good rule of thumb is – Do not pay to join an outsourcing website unless you thoroughly understand their intentions. If you pay, you increase the probability of being conned.
Check out this “A service provider who wants to join Elance chooses from among four membership packages, ranging from free to $9.95, $19.95, and $39.95 per month; you can change plans each month or opt out altogether. The higher the membership level, the more proposals you’re permitted to submit and the more keywords you’re allowed to use, boosting the chances of appearing high up in what Elance calls a buyer search. Elance helps you set up your profile with prepopulated outlines you can tailor to describe yourself, plus you can specify the types of projects/positions you’re looking for, salary range, preferred working location, and more.
What’s in it for Elance? In addition to the membership fee is collects, Elance also charges a service fee, in the range of 4% to 6% of a project’s total value, plus a 2.75% payment processing fee. That money is deduced each time a service provider receives payment. ” http://www.smallbizresource.com/blog/main/archives/2009/02/elance_79000_fr.html
I think this article would be useful http://www.elance.com/p/node/2965
All the best.
