- Personal Branding for Rich Men
Most of my theories on personal branding would not resonate well with people in the little village I come from in Kenya. Bob Marley said “a hungry man is an angry man”. I say a hungry man has little time for personal branding. Personal branding seems to work better for rich men, and for good reason.
Personal branding is one of the last things in the minds of poor people. I have lived with people without running water or electricity. Telling a person in that situation to launch their own personal branding blog or attend expensive networking events would make little sense.
What would you do if you were languishing in poverty? Would you buy bread or a Swiss watch? Would you take a second shower or buy high end colognes?
If at 29 I was still living with my parents, I reckon my personal brand would suffer. People would talk behind my back saying that I had “failed to launch”. I could have valid reasons for living there e.g. being jobless, but the world would hear none of it.
You do not have to be Bill Gates to have an effective personal brand. But sleeping on the streets won’t help you either. Being financially able to build your personal brand is rarely spoken about as a core element of personal branding. It is the missing link in many personal branding lessons. Heck, it even costs money to hire great personal branding coaches such as Lethia Owens.
I read and re-read my personal branding articles, they are great lessons, but they may not apply to everyone. Personal branding on an empty pocket or hungry stomach is an exercise in futility. Personal branding calls for confidence and self belief. Unfortunately, when poverty comes in through the door, confidence escapes through the window.
Making money or getting rich is a practical confidence building tactic in a capitalist world. If you are reading this, you are most likely not poor per se, but you are also, most likely, not Donald Trump or Richard Branson either. We have learned how to build a powerful personal brand in this series. In the next series, we shall look at how to fund a powerful personal brand.
The new series, starting tomorrow, will be about the science of getting rich. Yes there is a science to getting rich. I want to become rich and I want you to become rich too. Together we shall explore the road to riches. Together we shall eliminate the obstacles and lay the ground work to making some money.
Join me for the brand new “Get Rich Series” coming to you from tomorrow!
