My dad took me aside at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya on a fine September afternoon. He shared with me words of wisdom that have stayed with me ever since. My parents were nervous of cutting loose their green son, straight out of high school. They wanted to impart me with as much last minute wisdom as humanly possible.

I recently had a near death experience that made me re-evaluate aspects of my life. They say that your life flashes before you just before death. It was not quite like that for me. My mind froze. I did not have the luxury of watching the movie of my life in an instant. Nevertheless, that scary event raised my level of awareness and clarity. On her bookshelf, I noticed a red book entitled “Losing My Virginity”. I felt sad for her and thought to myself that it need not be that complicated. Let us say two of your friends are moving house. Like a good friend that you are, you decide to help them with the moving. It is back-breaking work, one friend (Jack) is moving on Monday, and the other (Alex) on Tuesday.
After the move, Jack goes quiet for a couple of months. On the other hand, Alex sends you a thank you card, with a bottle of champagne and calls you for a house warming party.
